I have just built a computer using the Abit GD8 Pro motherboard (with
Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz, 2x512MB Corsair DDR2 PC5300 RAM, ATI Radeon X1300 Pro
Super 512MB PCI-E Video Card, 80GB Samsung PATA Hard Drive). When I go to
boot up for the first time, the screen says to hit Tab to show POST or
Delete to enter BIOS (I assume to configure my CPU for first time use).
Problem is, any keyboard I try to use doesn't work. When I power up all the
LEDs on the keyboard light up briefly, indicating the PS2 port is providing
power, but after that, the keyboard does nothing. Hitting Caps Lock or Num
Lock does not light up the corresponding LED. I have tried 3 different PS2
keyboards. I would try a USB keyboard, but I don't have one. It means I
can't boot past the first screen because I can't hit Delete. Any ideas on
how to get the keyboard working? Alternatively, is there a way to get past
the first screen on the very first boot without entering the BIOS? >> Stay informed about: Abit GD8 Pro - can't use keyboard on boot |

Make sure the keyboard is in the right port, the lights will flash even in
the mouse port.
The computer should continue to windows even if there is no keyboard
attatched, then windows should complain about it.

try clearing the CMOS with the jumper with all power removed to see if that
can force the system to change behavior.

It's definitely in the right PS2 port.

This is the first time the computer has been booted. It doesn't have an
operating system at all, and usually when a system is booted for the first
time it requires you to go into the BIOS (usually get a message at POST
saying something like the CPU has been changed, defaults have been loaded,
hit F1 to continue or Del to enter the BIOS - except the POST isn't
displayed by default with this board so I can't see any of that, just a
pretty picture with the message I described above). >> Stay informed about: Abit GD8 Pro - can't use keyboard on boot |

That was the first thing I tried, but it still just sits at the screen
waiting for me to press Del or Tab and the keyboard does nothing. I am
thinking the PS2 port may be faulty? >> Stay informed about: Abit GD8 Pro - can't use keyboard on boot |

Tried it with the same result. Looks like I will be returning this one. Nice
